ed wines made from native grapes are steadily gaining popularity in Austria, which has long specialized in whites. Zweigelt, a cross between blaufränkisch and St. Laurent grapes, yields an especially appealing everyday red. The soft, spicy 2003 Riedencuvée from Walter Glatzer, the top producer in Carnuntum, a region southeast of Vienna, is one of the prettiest fresh zweigelts in town. Sip it with tafelspitz (boiled beef).
